Speaking as a Woman...
Growing up as a Woman of Color
in the Tolliver household, I learned
from an early age to love, honor and
appreciate the strong
African-American women that
surrounded me. All of the things
instilled in me by my mother and
father speaks to me throughout this
series.
"The
Dancer"
reminds us of what it feels like to
be free. To embrace ourselves, body
and soul.
"Doin'
Hair"
from
locks, to braids, to relaxers and
straightening combs, "Doin' Hair" is
a major part of all
women's lives!
-
"Stephanie,"
named for the model, captures
the softer, more sensual side of
us. A moment in solitude where
we can retreat and rejuvenate.
"Woman
With a Fruit Basket"
represents hard work, determination
and drive, yet it also reflects the
natural nurturer in us all.
-
My father spent his childhood
surrounded by strong women and,
it was his mother who first
introduced him to the field of
art. It was important to him
that he showcased
African-Americans with pride and
dignity. I sincerely hope that
these works capture that and
much more!
- Artfully Yours,
DeAnna
